Using resources and personnel found in Brazil during travels in June and July, Explorasport has developed entertaining/relevant methods to “sell” the concepts of sustainable eco-tourism development to communities using theatre “Plays” to communicate and teach to individuals in those communties who urgently need the skills and information.
The plays would be an “interactive” learning/entertainment events for the whole community to understand the complex business of Eco-tourism:
THE WHOLE COMMUNITY
The “Main”(introductory) presentation at a site would be for the
whole community, (all the stakeholders interested in the future
of their community, even if they are not directly involved in
tourism service)...
BREAK DOWN TO SMALLER SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS
Then, subsequent “satellite” plays and role-playing plays and
role-playing activities over the next few days would explain
and train tourism workers interested in specific areas -
METHODOLOGY
The objective of the smaller, more specific satellite plays will
be to “train the trainers” so we leave the training tools in the
minds of the residents, to grow, evolve (differentiate) and
adapt within the community.
People in the community will remember the stories and techniques featured in the plays, and be able to repeat and “refresh” the training for community members after a few months. The advantage of this approach is that the community itself can train new workers long after our “Tourism Training Troupe” has moved on to another community in Brazil.
ORGANIC PROPOGATION
Our plan is to use the eco-friendly community of Itaúnas to model
the first Plays (this is where our resources are right now for
playwriting in Portugese and English).
Next we will test the Plays in different communities (eg.
Santarém... Pedras Negras...) and then teach the Plays through Brazilian government organizations (eg. PROECOTUR, IBAMA, CNPT, PNF, CNS, etc.,) at local facilities, eventually
developing a “generic” format to be adapted by other “Carrier”
organizations and spread to other areas and communities in
Brazil.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of our approach is to develop the initiative to
reach for world “standards” in eco-tourism service while at the
same time retaining and celebrating diversity in Brazilian
cultures, facilities, products and biodiversity. In short,
improve tourism standards from the “bottom up” and not the “top
down”.
FUTURE FOLLOW-THROUGH
The next modules would train the “top students” from the
introductory program described above to go on to become Technicians,
Coordinators and ultimately Auditors in the emerging certifications.
This overall approach will build capacity, assure the sovereignty
of a Brazilian Certification system, and create the opportunity
for representation by Brazilian experts (Auditors) in the
emerging global certification schemes.
